Thomer M. Gil
My name is Thomer [
]. Nice as that name may be, it's a problem sometimes: I st-t-t-tutter a bit and
sometimes have difficulties pronouncing some words, especially my own name [how to react when speaking with a person who
stutters]. If you think you have to, you can look at some photos of me.
On first approximation I'm Dutch. I grew up in The Netherlands and Dutch is my first language. (And, in case you're confused, read about the difference between Dutch and Danish.) I'm a child of Israeli and Swiss parents, who, in turn, were born from Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Swiss, and French backgrounds. I too live in a different country than the one I was born in.
I work at Meraki after having left my Ph.D. in "All-But-Dissertation" status at CSAIL, the Computer Science Laboratory at MIT. My Ph.D. was with Sam Madden on something vaguely related to sensor networks and databases. Before that, I worked in the PDOS group, also at CSAIL. I obtained my Master's degree from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam (see my unconventional guide to Amsterdam).
When I don't work, I ride my bike, cook, bake bread, think, listen to music, play my piano, and take pictures. Sometimes I write fun software or pointless web pages. I used to write stories to friends and family at home.
