Firefox hangs with flash

Problem

Many, if not most flash files load and run in Firefox, but some cause it to hang such that only killing Firefox will solve the problem.

Solution

After renaming my ~/.mozilla directory, starting with a fresh Firefox profile, and adding plugins one by one, I discovered that the problem is the Adblock Plus plugin.

This led me to a Ninja Monkeys! page which tells you to go to Tools -> Adblock Plug -> Options, and disable "Show Tabs on Flash and Java".
